NGO says smuggling and bribery should be punished with 20 years in jail

The public association “Moldova Mea” considers that such offenses as smuggling and bribery must be punished with 20 years' imprisonment. The association's head Fiodor Ghelici, who is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), told a news conference that they submitted the given proposal to the President, the Parliament and the leader of the PLDM on Wednesday morning, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Ghelici, the idea of modifying Moldova's Penal Code appeared after a customs officer on February 2 asked bribe from a company for validating the documents needed to bring goods into the country. The customs officer told the company's representative not to pay the required tax, but a lower sum to him personally. Ghelici said he and the association got involved and discussed directly with the head of the Customs Service, informing him about this case. He added that similar cases exist in courts of law, at the prosecutor's office, medical and education institutions, etc. Fiodor Ghelici said that if the MPs agree to amend the Penal Code, the state budget will be larger and there will be enough money to increase the pensions and salaries. He also said that the imposing of stricter punishment is the only solution for rooting out corruption in Moldova. According to him, the MPs who will not accept these amendments might pursue personal goals and the society will see who they are.
