Nicolae Timofti hopeful post of Premier will be held on interim basis not long

President Nicolae Timofti, who named Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman as acting Prime Minister in the morning of June 22, voiced hope that this situation will not last long. At the beginning of a meeting with the interim Cabinet he called, the head of state said next week he will invite the parliamentary parties to discussions so as to designate a candidate for premiership, IPN reports.

Nicolae Timofti told the outgoing ministers that until a new Government is formed, they will work based on Article 103 of the Constitution and will only administer the public affairs. They must maintain appropriate conditions at the institutions they manage and must leave no room for disquiet as the people are concerned about the events in society and expect peace and that the state institutions will function.

“The current payments, public order, state security, the economic and diplomatic processes must be ensured in a responsible and prompt way. I hope this period of uncertainty will not last long. Immediately after the second round of the local elections, I will invite the parliamentary groups to choose a candidate for Prime Minister,” said Nicolae Timofti, calling on the parliamentary factions to focus on the objective of forming a new Government.

Acting Premier Natalia Gherman told the journalists that she thanked the head of state for the confidence he put in her. “As acting Prime Minister, I will not set ambitious objectives as all the prerogatives of the interim Cabinet are very clearly defined in the legislation. The key goal is to ensure the functionality of the institutions in the main areas, the continuity of the launched processes and projects and public order. I’m confident that this will be a short period as the people need a stable government that will continue the reforms and on the European course of Moldova,” she stated.

Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici announced his resignation on June 12. He said he does not want to be accused of influencing the investigation into the authenticity of his diploma. He also said that Moldova’s Premier does not now enjoy the freedom needed to act and do reforms.
