Nicolae Timofti proposes creating commission of inquiry into Paciu case

Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti considers that the state institutions acted inappropriately in the case of Sorin Paciu’s killing during the hunting in the Domneasca Forest, which involved government officials. The head of state suggests creating a special commission under parliamentary control, which would investigate the way the institution dealt with this case, the President’s spokesman Vlad Turcanu said in a press briefing, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Nicolae Timofti considerers that the late informing of the state administration and the public opinion about this case left room for different interpretations as regards possible attempts by persons holding responsible positions to hush this case up. The head of state also believes that the Prosecutor General’s Office must be reformed so as to strengthen the prosecutors’ independence and to identify a suitable place for the prosecution service in the system of the law enforcement bodies. Nicolae Timofti will not demand dismissing government officials in connection with this case as he considers that this is the prerogative of Parliament. According to Turcanu, Nicolae Timofti found out about the Falesti incident on the afternoon of January 6, from his counselors and from the press. Sorin Paciu, 34, died in the hospital two days after he was wounded from a gun during hunting on December 23. The case was made known on January 6 by politician Sergiu Mocanu, who accused the prosecutor general of killing Sorin Paciu and of hiding this fact. Valeriu Zubko denied the accusations in an open letter.
