Nicolae Timofti wants judge candidates to be checked thoroughly

The Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) took note of President Nicolae Timofti’s request to check more thoroughly the files of candidates proposed for judge seats, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to his competences, the President of Moldova appoints, on the proposal of CSM, judges, chairmen and deputy chairmen in all courts, except for the Supreme Justice Court. CSM checks the truthfulness of papers presented by candidates, verifies the information about their income and properties, as well as their competences in judge ethics and discipline. In his notification, Nicolae Timofti explains that CSM should check the candidate’s entire file and verify the presented information before submitting the appointment proposal to the head of the state. “I have to say that some of the Magistrates’ Superior Council’s proposals regarding the appointment of judges don’t contain information about the results of the examination and verification of data in the candidate’s personal file, not his explications or the appreciations of the Council”, reads the President’s notification. Nicolae Timofti added that in previous cases, proposed judges hadn’t provided information about their real estate and movables in the verification questionnaire. “In my regard, not declaring these assets undermines justice, compromises the magistrate’s honor and dignity, raises doubts about his objectivity. Considering this, I ask the CSM to examine more thoroughly and multilaterally the papers included in the judge candidates’ files and to argue its decisions”, the President says in his notification. Until now, Nicolae Timofti rejected four candidates proposed by the CSM for a judge’s seat.
