A group of veterans of the Nistru armed conflict called on the government not to forget those who fought for the country's independence. They said they cannot cultivate the land given to them for use as some of the plots will be privatized, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Markets and parking lots were set up on these plots so that the veterans have a workplace. But now they want to privatize the land and drive the veterans away, one of the veterans Zaharia Sclifos said in a news conference on March 9. “Nobody cares about us. It took us one summer to build these markets and parking lots and now they want to take them away from us with no reason,” he said.
Combatant Haralambie Stambol said that not all the veterans who fought fearlessly have been decorated. He spoke about a man from Anenii Noi who lost a leg and a hand in battles, but receives a second disability degree pension, though he is an invalid of the first degree.
The conference organizers also said that all the veterans should join together to form one organization. They stressed the necessity of creating a commission that would examine veterans' permits issued. According to Zaharia Sclifos, about 25,000 combatants took part in the Nistru war, but there are 64,000 persons holding veterans' permits.
The National Union of Independence War Veterans said 32,000 such permits were issued after the Nistru war ended.
