The television channel NIT, which was to stop broadcasting for five days under a decision taken by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC), submitted an application to the broadcasting authority, requesting annulling the penalty. The channel was penalized for violations committed during the election campaign. The decision took effect on July 1 after it was published in the Official Gazette, BCC chairman Marian Pocaznoi confirmed for Info-Prim Neo. Marian Pocaznoi described the application filed by NIT as attempt to postpone the implementation of the BCC’s decision. Under the existing procedure, the Council is to examine the application within 30 days. Most probably, the issue will be included in the agenda of the next meeting. “The BCC’s decision cannot be annulled as it is perfectly legal. The members of the Council who voted in favor of penalizing NIT cannot accept the channel’s request,” said the Council’s chairman. The decision to force NIT to suspend broadcasting for five days was adopted on June 24 by the vote of six of the eight BCC members attending. The penalty was imposed for biased covering of the campaign preceding the local elections and deviations from the Broadcasting Code and the Regulations of the Central Election Commission.
