“We'll get out every time to accustom the police that protesting is a civilized thing to do and they shall not interdict us to do this,” says Igor Grosu, the chairman of the board of Amnesty International Moldova. A number of human rights groups from Moldova protested in front of the Interior Ministry on February 13, supporting the public assemblies, after a similar action in front of the General Prosecutor's Office, Info-Prim Neo reports. Antonita Fonari from the Tineri si liberi NGO says the protesters are unhappy about the functioning of the Moldovan judiciary, adding that certain structures are corrupt and the right to free speech is not respected. “The people from the Interior Ministry are obliged to defend us, when we're not happy about certain things, but they do not do this,” Antonita Fonari said. “We're here to support the freedom of assembly in Moldova. On February 3 the police did not protect the peaceful protesters, so we came today to make the Ministry's employees aware of the fact that the police shall defend the assemblies,” said Sergiu Ostap, the director of the Resource Center for Human Rights “CReDO”. Several attendees officially submitted a 'visible' petition in the shape of a poster with two balls on it: black and white. The black ball stood as a symbol for the breeches admitted during peaceful manifestations, while the white ball stood for the respect of the law. An official with the Interior Ministry, Veaceslav Matcovschi, has told the protesters their “petition” will be considered during 30 days, as the law provides for. The NGOs headed for the Interior Ministry after staying an hour in front of the General Prosecutor's Office, to which they also handed a petition. The February 13 march is the third in the recent period to support the peaceful assemblies. The first two were staged on December 25, 2008 and on February 3, 2009. The last one was not supervised by the police, when a team of masked assailants attacked the protesters spraying them paint. Many got slightly injured.
