North Customs Office head and 6 other officials targeted in corruption investigation

The head of the North Customs Office and six other officials, including heads of customs subdivisions, are under criminal investigation for passive corruption, the legal term for bribe-taking. Investigators today conducted searches, and as a result, six suspects were detained, and another one released on bail.

The National Anticorruption Center believes that the suspects have organized a scheme to solicit bribes from individuals and businesses for expediting the transit of goods or evading customs procedures, with the illicit amounts ranging from 1,500 to 9,000 euros.

The investigation is ongoing, under the procedural supervision of the Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office.
