Number of Supreme Court justices to be reduced

The Supreme Court will be reformed, with the number of its justices to be reduced from 33 to 20, among other proposals approved by the Government today.

The proposed reform also envisages a fundamental change in the Court’s make-up by extending eligibility to other legal professions besides judges. These include attorneys, prosecutors and professors of law.

Additionally, the Court’s authority will be revised with a view to emphasizing its basic role of harmonizing case law and judicial practice, and of ensuring a uniform interpretation and application of law.

“The Supreme Court reform is vital. After all, without essential changes at the level of the Supreme Court, it is impossible to achieve stronger independence, greater integrity and individual responsibility for judges on lower courts”, declared Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.

The draft law was submitted to public consultations, approved and expert-assessed, by the Venice Commission among others, and will have the effect of increasing the quality of justice administration, ensuring the appointment of impartial and morally upright justices, increasing people’s confidence in the judiciary.
