A man aged 60 who suffered from renal insufficiency benefitted from a transplant of kidney from a brain-dead donor. This was the 100th transplant operation performed in Moldova, IPN has learned from the Ministry of Health.
The patient was dependent on dialysis during a year. Three months ago, he was included in the waiting list. “I’m happy! I was lucky. I thank that family that accepted to donate the organ of their brain-dead relative. I thank the doctors who struggled for my life,” said the man.
Minister of Health Ruxanda Glavan said the 100th transplant is a big success for the national health system. This shows that the transplant service is efficient. “We will make sure that the actions planned in the new national transplant program are carried out as set. We project to perform by 50 kidney transplants and 20 liver transplants a year,” as the new program provides,” stated the minister.
Since the kidney transplantation was resumed in 2011, there were performed 66 operations. The authorities plan to increase the number of kidney transplants by 60% until 2021. The first liver transplant was performed in 2013. One year later, doctors transplanted liver from a brain-dead donor. A number of 34 liver transplants have been performed so far. By 2021, the figure is to rise by 45%.
The National Transplant Program for 2017 – 2021 was approved by the Government this March. Almost 420 million lei is needed to implement the activities defined in this.
