Obstetrician given suspended sentence for causing serious injury to newborn

An obstetrician-gynecologist of the Mother and Child Institute was convicted of malpractice. The court gave her a two-year suspended sentence and banned her from practicing for a three-year period, IPN reports.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said that in June 2019, the pregnant woman was admitted to the Mother and Child Institute. The obstetrician examined her superficially and decided to finish the delivery by vacuum extraction. As a result, the child was born in a state of severe asphyxia with severe brain damage (encephalopathy), cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage and other post-asphyxic complications. According to the medical expert’s report, the caused serious bodily injury was causally related to the doctor’s actions.

The defendant pleaded not guilty. The Buiucani Court of Chisinau City found the doctor guilty of negligent violation of the rules or methods of providing medical assistance. The preventive measure of not leaving the country imposed on the doctor was maintained until the entry into force of the sentence.

The ruling can be appealed to a higher court.
