Olesea Vîrlan resigns as SCP member

Olesea Vîrlan tendered her resignation from the post of Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP). The Council’s members on Monday took note of her application. The move was made in connection with the failed competition for the selection of the prosecutor general, IPN reports.

“I approve of this decision by Missis Vîrlan. It is a proof of responsibility, maturity and commitment. The courage to make such a request is appreciated. Here, the public interest, the institutional interest prevailed over the personal interest to maintain the stability of the office of SCP member,” said the Council’s chairman Dumitru Obadă.

The competition to choose the candidate for the position of prosecutor general was revoked following dissatisfaction expressed with the score awarded in the interview stage. The SCP awarded anticorruption prosecutor Octavian Yakimovski 8.53 points, prosecutor Igor Demciucin - 8.19, current interim prosecutor general Ion Munteanu – 8.16, and jurist Andrei Coca – 4.72 points.

After the evaluation forms were published, Olesea Vîrlan came with a reaction, noting that any assessment has a dose of subjectivity. Any error in the legal field can be corrected by legal means. “Regarding Mister Ion Munteanu’s candidacy, I have no personal objections, just as I have no objections to the other candidates. If there hadn’t been these errors, Mister Ion Munteanu’s score would have been 8.5,” she said.

Following the annulment by the Superior Council of Prosecutors of the competition for the selection of the prosecutor general, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office initiated criminal proceedings.

Detached prosecutor Olesea Vîrlan was elected SCP member at the General Assembly of Prosecutors on December 23, 2023.
