One in ten persons aged between 15 and 29 is out of work

The unemployment rate among the young people is high owing to the low salaries paid to them. The fact that they remain out of work is a real loss of human capital that results in a shortage of skilled labor. These are the main conclusions of the third Social Monitor. According to the study, one in ten persons aged between 15 and 29 does not work, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”. The author of the study, expert in social policies and development Viorica Antonov said the young people's place on the labor market is uncertain. On the one hand, the qualifications of the young specialists do not meet the labor market requirements. On the other hand, the employers doubt the skills of the young specialists as they do not have practical experience. According to the study, the communication between employers and universities should be improved in order to prevent the emigration of specialists. Viorica Antonov said there should be created Excellence Centers where the young specialists could exchange experience with foreign professionals. She also said that the authorities must make sure that the migrants are protected in the countries were they work and that the remittances are efficiently invested in the country. The author of the study recommends reducing the discrepancy in the tuition fees for such key specialties as marketing, banks and audit, tourism and hotel services, law, finances and insurance, administrative sciences and ICT and for less attractive specialties like librarianship, metrology and engineering. The Social Monitor made by “Viitorul” appears with the financial support of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
