Eugen Tapu, aged 26, is the third young man reported to have been beaten to death by the police after the April 7 protests. He will be buried on Saturday in Soroca town.
Soroca's mayor Victor Sau has told Info-Prim Neo Eugen's father, Andrei Tapu, was called on April 16 to Chisinau to take the man's corpse from the morgue. The father was the only allowed to see Eugen, since he was taken home in a sealed coffin. He told the mayor the body was in an advanced state of putrefaction. “Worms were eating him,” the ruined father said. He saw bruises from battery on his son's corpse.
The death certificate is dated April 7. Morgue officials told the father his son hanged himself with the shoelaces. But the family believe Eugen was beaten to death by the police.
“It's a big tragedy in the town,” said Soroca's mayor. “Eugen was an energetic youth. He played rugby in Chisinau. All the town knew him,” Victor Sau says.
Media reported about two other young men who died allegedly after being beaten up by the police, following the April 7 protests.
Alexandru Tanase, the Tapus' lawyer, has told Info-Prim Neo he will start the internal legal procedures after the Easter holidays. “We'll sue the Government, which, under the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitution, shall insure the right to life for its citizens. It's not likely that a 26-year-old boy commits suicide,” Tanase said.
“The family has the right to sue the Government and ask for moral and material damages,” the barrister says. According to him, if they fail to win the case in Moldova, they will go to the European Court of Human Rights.
