Only 37 of 243 railway crossings have barriers
Only 37 of 243 railway crossings have barriers and security, the Ministry of Transports and Infrastructure informs. Three of them have been installed in an urgent manner where national or local roads cross with railways, according to a government decision, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“After carefully examining the intensity of railway and road traffic, in agreement with the Traffic Police and the Roads State Enterprise, three crossings have been equipped with barriers and security and put into use on December 8. The barriers have been installed at the 1603rd km in Calarasi and at the 150th and 154th km on the Donduseni- Rediul Mari railway”, announced Deputy Transport Minister Valeriu Cubciuc.
The official explained that for economic reasons, the barriers were installed only in the places with the busiest traffic. “Installing a barrier with security costs about 2 million lei and the annual maintenance amounts to 50,000 lei. We don’t have enough money to install bars at every crossing, especially considering that there are places where trains pass only once a week”, said the deputy minister.
The crossings of roads with railways have been checked between November 16 and December 15. The decision was adopted by the Government after the tragedy in Bulboaca on November 1, when 7 people died after a minibus was hit by a train.
