Organ transplantation in Moldova to be renewed in 2011

The persons in need of transplantation of organs or tissues will be able to have the operation in Moldova from next year, officials of the Ministry of Health said during an international workshop themed “Legislative, organizational and economic aspects of donation and transplantation of human organs, tissues and cells,” Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Minister of Health Vladimir Hotineanu, the transplantation in Moldova will be resumed after about ten years. It became possible after the creation of the Transplantation Agency and the amendment of the legislation. Vladimir Hotineanu said kidney, liver, marrow, ovule and cell transplant operations will be performed in Moldova. The costs will be covered by the state for persons who have mandatory health insurance polices. The patients will also benefit from free post-operation treatment. The hospitals that will perform transplant operations have not been yet chosen. According to Vladimir Hotineanu, these will probably include the Nefrology Center (kidney), the Hematology Clinic of the Oncology Institute (marrow), the Traumatology Clinic (bones), the Ophthalmology Clinic (cornea), and the National Scientific Practical Center of Heart Surgery. The last statistical data show about 230 persons need kidney transplant during a year. The development of the organ and tissue transplant service in Moldova started with the transplantation of bones and cornea. The National Kidney Transplant Center was founded at the National Clinical Hospital in1982. Following recommendations made by experts of the Council of Europe, in March 2008 the Parliament of Moldova adopted the law on the transplantation of organs, tissues and cells.
