Orthodox Christians celebrate the Ascension

The Orthodox Christians observe the Ascension of Jesus on May 24. Popularly known as ‘Ispas’, the Feast of the Ascension commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day from Easter Day. Priest Eugen Onikov, of Saint Panhtelemon Church, has told Info-Prim Neo that the Ascension of Jesus is one of the 12 great feasts in the Christian liturgical calendar. “During 40 days after Easter, we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus and greeted each other with “Jesus is risen!” and the response was “He is risen, indeed!”. At the end of this period, the women bake pound cakes and paint the eggs red, as on Easter,” he stated. In some settlements, the greeting “Jesus is risen!” is used during one day, while in others during three or even ten days. Among other customs connected with the liturgy of this feast is the Commemoration of the Dead in the Canon of the Mass. Mass is attended and the Paschal candle, which was lit on Easter Sunday, is extinguished.
