A Christian Orthodox group of initiative in Moldova calls for the Church Synod (the General Assembly of the Moldovan Orthodox Church) to be summoned in order to excommunicate all those who contributed to the adoption of the Law on Ensuring Equality, more commonly known as the Antidiscrimination Law, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Nicolae Negara, member of the initiative group, told a press conference on Monday that a similar request from the group had been ignored by the Metropolitan Church of Moldova on May 25. The only reaction was the summoning of the Eparchial Assembly on May 31 to polish the Metropolitan’s compromised image.
“Besides the fact that this assembly wasn’t summoned canonically, it has abusively forbidden any public Orthodox confession from the Christians. This is an apocalyptical scenario: when it was most needed for the voice of the Metropolitan Church to denounce the government’s attempt to legalize sodomy, it kept silent as if commanded to. When Christians expressed their indignation and their wish for the Church to anathematize those who voted for the Antidiscrimination Law, the Metropolitan Church reacted hysterically, acting as the government’s lawyer”, declared Nicolae Negara.
“We hope that His Eminence, as a true shepherd that stakes his soul for his herd, will summon the Metropolitan Synod and, according to the canons, will anathematize those who legalized sodomy in Moldova”, added another member of the initiative group, Dorin Jamba.
The young Orthodox Christians demand Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim, chairman of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tanase, all the members of the Cabinet, the 53 MPs who voted the law and President Nicolae Timofti who promulgated it to be given over to anathema. The members of the initiative group threaten that should their request be ignored again, they will request a patriarchal commission to be sent from Moscow and evaluate Metropolitan Vladimir’s capacity to shepherd the Moldovan Orthodox Church.
