Since Prime Minister Vlad Filat’s request for safety barriers to be installed at railway crossings in November 2011, only six have been installed. The Ministry of Transports and Road Infrastructure, in charge of executing the Prime Minister’s request, says that the installation of all barriers in good time was impossible because of the large amounts of money required. Deputy Minister of Transports and Road Infrastructure Valeriu Ciubuc told Info-Prim Neo that the installation of a barrier at an unguarded crossing cost about 2 million lei, and the maintenance costs were about 200,000 lei per year. In Moldova, there are about 240 railway crossings, of which only 38 are guarded. The installation of safety barriers at each of them would cost the Government 500 million lei. The 6 crossings that were equipped with barriers since November were selected as the most dangerous after an evaluation by the specialists of the Moldovan Railway Company, alongside the police and the road workers. Another 54 crossings were selected for urgent installation of barriers. According to the Minister, a solution would be to fund these works through projects that finance the repair of railroad sections. Valeriu Ciubuc said that the Ministry presented to the Government the modern equipment that is used in Ukraine. He highlighted that this equipment was twice cheaper, needed no monitoring personnel and ensured increased safety. It’s a system that automatically blocks the access of road vehicles to passages through the railway. Vlad Filat had previously requested Minister of Transports Anatol Salaru to order the subordinated institutions to install barriers at all the crossings of the railway. The request came at the beginning of November after an accident near Bulboaca, Anenii Noi district, killed 8 people and injured 13 other. The accident happened because the driver ignored the red light and tried to cross the railroad, getting hit by a train.
