Parliament rejects broadcasting agency's 2009 performance report
Parliament on Friday rejected the 2009 performance report presented by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC). Within 30 days the BCC is to present a program of actions to remedy the deficiencies highlighted by the lawmakers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Corina Fusu, the chairwoman of the parliamentary commission responsible for mass media, said that the report presented by BCC head Gheorghe Gorincioi failed to answer the question of how the BBC respected its obligations and competences under the Broadcasting Code. It was also not clear what principles were used to monitor broadcasting institutions through the year.
Corina Fusu stated the BCC failed to pay adequate attention to the broadcasters that exert great influence upon society. “The BCC didn't carry out in earnest its monitoring task during the races preceding the polls on April 5 and July 29, 2009”. Corina Fusu.
The BCC will also have to give explanations concerning the report of the Court of Accounts which found a number of infringements.
Additionally, the lawmakers recalled the monitoring reports of the Moldovan civil society and the Council of Europe, which found, among other, that “the BCC neglected its supervision and monitoring activity, its attributions and obligations specific to the election campaign”.
