Parliament scraps Russian lines in Moldovan ID cards
Parliament today approved in first reading a bill introducing ID cards for the Moldovan citizens that will be smaller than the existing ones, won't have information lines translated to Russian and English, and won't come with the so-called “accompanying sheets”, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The new cards will be exclusively used for voting purposes and only until a Electronic Electoral Register is implemented. The information on the holder's residence will be transferred from the accompanying sheet to the card itself. The bill also provides that temporary IDs will be issued for free in electoral periods.
ICT Minsiter Pavel Filip said the new cards will cost less as their production requires less materials.
The Communists opposed the proposed law, arguing that the citizens will have to change their ID cards every time they change their residence. Another thing that aroused their discontent was the proposal to scrap the information lines in Russian.
The bill is due to take effect 6 months after publication.
