The buses and minibuses that transport passengers will be equipped with road speed limiters and tachographs. Such a condition is stipulated in the Road Transport Code that was approved by the Government and is to be passed by Parliament. Iulian Postica, head of the Transport Ministry’s Road Transport Division, has told IPN that the units of transport will be outfitted with the mentioned devices by authorized companies. A speed limiter and a tachograph cost about €100 each.
The highest speed allowed will be laid down in the Motor Transport and Baggage Regulations that will be drafted by the Ministry after the Road Transport Code is adopted. The speed limit for national transport in other countries is 90-100 kilometers per hour.
”The use of speed limiters and tachographs is a European practice. Following the negotiation of the Association Agreement, we are obliged to also implement it. It is a road safety measure. The minibuses on the national roads in Moldova can now travel at a speed of 130 kilometers per hour or even higher. Many accidents occur because of high speed,” said Iulian Postica.
The tachograph is a device that is used in vehicles to measure their speed, how far they have traveled and when the driver has stopped to rest. In the EU, drivers are legally required to accurately record their activities, retain the records and produce them on demand to transport authorities that are charged with enforcing regulations governing drivers working hours.
The drivers will be offered two to six years to comply with the new rule. Those will not do it will be fined. The taxis will not be obliged to have speed limiters and tachographs.
