Passports will be stamped at border optionally

From August 2, the Moldovans who will cross the border will get their passports stamped only if they want. An order to this effect was signed by the Border Guard Service director general Alexei Roibu, Info-Prim Neo reports. The measure comes after Prime Minister Vlad Filat, in the July 29 meeting of the Government, requested Alexei Roibu to find a solution and abandon the practice of stamping the passports every time the Moldovan nationals cross the state border. In a news conference on July 30, Alexei Roibu said over 4.3 million of the about 6 million people who crossed the state border in the first half of this year were Moldovans. “These amendments do not apply to the foreigners. They will get their passports stamped when entering and leaving Moldova,” he said. Asked if the lack of stamps will not cause problems at foreign border crossing points, Alexei Roibu said the personal data are included in the database of the Border Guard Service, which is accessible to the Border Guard Services of all the countries. The director general of the Border Guard Service also said that a number of changes have been implemented at the border crossing points since the start of this year. They aim to facilitate the crossing of the state border and reduce the time spent in customs. Among the most important changes is the removal of the bars. Now the vehicles stop only once for check. Eighteen of the border crossing points were connected to the Interpol's online database. The number of documents needed to cross the border was decreased.
