“We haven’t yet taken a decision as to a candidate for premiership. We are the largest parliamentary group and must have the right to the first option, including to propose a candidate for Prime Minister,” said Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the lawmaker voiced hope that a compromise will be reached as a result of the planned negotiations and discussions, IPN reports.

“Afterward, if we reach an agreement, we will suggest a candidate for Prime Minister, who will be able to take Moldova out of this profound crisis. We need to form a stable Government as soon as possible so as to solve the country’s problems,” stated the lawmaker.

As to the lack of quorum at the special sitting of Parliament, where the investiture of the Sturza Government was to be considered, the MP said that from legal viewpoint this means a vote against and a failed attempt. “I do not agree with those who say that it is lack of respect or something done intentionally. Anyway, legally the Sturza Government wasn’t given a vote of confidence yesterday and we have legal precedents in 2000, when the quorum was not present at the meeting to elect the head of state. The Constitutional Court ruled then that the boycotting or blocking of the procedure is a form of protest and a vote against and the election attempt is thus considered failed,” noted Sergiu Sarbu.

He said now that the Sturza Government could not be voted in, there is no other solution than to restart the talks with the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the European People’s Party of Moldova and the unaffiliated MPs so as to try and reach a consensus.

The Constitutional Court stated that the parliamentary majority that will field a candidate for Prime Minister must be formalized. Sergiu Sarbu considers this can be done easily, by signing an agreement to form a parliamentary coalition by indicating the areas of responsibility and the party that will occupy the post of Prime Minister.
