Pensioner sentenced for trafficking in people

A man from Tighina town aged 65 will serve four years and eight months in jail for trafficking in people, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, in the summer of 2016 the offender profited from the vulnerability of two women aged 18 and 21 and convinced them to work as lady companions in Dubai. He promised them a salary of at least US$1,500 a month. He made a passport for one of these, purchased tickets for them and accompanied them to the Chisinau Airport.

In Dubai, the girls were met by an accomplice of the culprit, who accommodated them at a hotel and, profiting from the fact that they didn’t know the language and surroundings, forced them to have sex for money.

The sentence was passed by the Chisinau Court on February 23. This can be appealed to a higher court.
