Pensioners protest on Independence Day

Members of the Pensioners Union of the Republic of Moldova mounted a protest in front of the Parliament Building on August 27, when it was celebrated the Independence Day. According to the Union’s chairman Victor Leanca, the elderly people were driven to the protest by their needs and difficulties, IPN reports.

After they laid flowers at the monument to ruler Stephan the Great and Holy in central Chisinau, the pensioners marched to the Parliament Building, where they protested peacefully. “Regrettably, today we cannot say that we are independent, first of all because we have a foreign army on our territory, our country was captured and the pensioners suffer and feel this the most. We thus took to the streets to seek rights because these are being violated. The people meet with difficulties, both those from villages and those from towns,” stated Victor Leanca.

At the end, the members of the Pensioners Union adopted a resolution by which they expressed their disagreement with the reform in the pension system, with the non-distribution of dividends earned as a result of privatization, with the fact that no money of the stolen US$ 1 billion has been yet recovered and with the adoption of the law by which the people are obliged to repay the embezzled funds.
