Pensioners take to streets again

The head of “Salvgardare” NGO Maia Laguta staged a new protest in Chisinau on Thursday, gathering the elderly people dissatisfied with the rise in water and sewerage charges and bus and trolleybus fares. The protest comes a day after the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that it will not take legal action over this case, as Maia Laguta demanded earlier, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The refusal of the Prosecutor General’s Office is unfounded. They sent me to the Chisinau Council. Are they playing football with me? We will besiege the City Council and demand that they present the documents on the basis of which they raised the charges and fares,” Maia Laguta said during the meeting. “Regrettably, many persons fell into despair. They thought the problem will be solved quicker,” Laguta said, explaining why the protesters were so low in number. The pensioners started to protest on September 29, after the Chisinau Municipal Council on September 15 decided to increase the water and sewerage charges and to strike the pensioners off the list of persons who travel by buses and trolleybuses free of charge.
