People evacuated because of floods

The levee of the pond in Opaci, Causeni, burst and the water extended, endangering over 20 houses. The authorities decided to evacuate the dwellers, while rescuers helped reinforce the levee with sacks of sand. A General Staff was created on the spot to coordinate the intervention process and information exchange, IPN reports.

According to the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, 24 houses were damaged in the village. One cellar was demolished and a number of fowls drowned. As many as 80 wells were affected, 15 bridges were destroyed, while eight bridges were broken. There were no casualties. The local lake is 12 ha in area.

Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean, who was on the scene, wrote on a social networking site that 70 rescuers and 20 carabineers built levees from sacks of sand alongside residents of Opaci. Two power generators and 15 pumps were sent to the village to collect water from places where it accumulated in a large volume.

The dwellers of the damaged houses are housed by villagers. The local commission for emergencies is to convene at 7am this morning.
