The organizations “Societatea umană” (“Human society”) and “Eco-Tiras” and a group of personalities submitted a petition to Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu and Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu by which they suggest banning the import of dolphins. These note that several dolphins and several seals imported from Ukraine are kept at the dolphinarium that started work in Chisinau on May 27. In closed areas, the conditions of keeping these mammals differ a lot from the natural conditions and this leads to their premature death, IPN reports.
The signatories warn that the populations of dolphins decrease owing to the worse environmental conditions. Among the main factors that lead to the premature death of dolphins in artificial conditions are the absence of sea as natural habitat, the small area of pools that destroy their echolocation system and makes communication between them impossible and feeding on frozen fish, which the dolphins do not eat in natural conditions.
The petitioners are convinced that such a ban will enable Moldova to make its own contribution to saving the dolphins whose population in the world diminished over 10 times during the last 50 years.
Among the signatories are: Vasile Botnaru, Constantin Cheianu, Ion Dron, Maria Levcenco, Andrei Popov, Ilia Trombitchii, Karl Luganov, Diana Decuseara-Onica, Sergiu Voloc, Nelly Cozaru, and others. The signatory organizations are: “Eco-Tiras”, “Societatea Umana”, the National Environmental Center, “Alga”, etc.
