PGO: We work in accordance with Constitution and legislation

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) approves of the fact that the protest mounted by a group of activists and the Hyde Park Association in front of its head office on December 28 was held without breaking the legislation, in a civilized way and without violating public order. Asked by IPN to comment on the accusations of abuse made against prosecutors, the PGO’s press officer Maria Vieru said the prosecution service works in accordance with the Constitution and the national legislation, while prosecutors’ acts are subject to inspection, including judicial one.

According to Maria Vieru, given that no petitions or concrete demands were submitted today, the PGO regards the protest as a right to freely express one’s opinions, which is a guaranteed right of any Moldovan citizen.

As to the accusations made by the protesters, the press officer said no deviations from the legislation were identified when examining challenges and complaints over cases invoked by these. “If new circumstances appeared, we are ready to examine them in accordance with the relevant procedures,” she stated.

A group of protesters chanted in front of the PGO that they do not want criminal cases started by order and the conviction of human rights activists and independent journalists.
