Over 1,100 illegally held weapons and pieces of ammunition were captured by police in a series of raids going under the codename “Arsenal”, during October 16-24, which were prompted by the explosion that occurred in central Chisinau on October 14, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Mihai Cebotaru, department head at the Interiors Ministry, told a press conference on Tuesday the capture included 21 projectiles, 20 grenades, and 860 weapons. Five criminal cases have been initiated so far following the raids.
Since the adoption of the Law on voluntary surrender of unlicensed weapons in 2002, nearly 4,200 illegally held arms have brought to the police. At the same time, over 3,000 persons who refused to abide by this law underwent prosecution.
