The president of the Basketball Federation of Moldova was arrested on suspicion of misappropriation by swindle on May 16. According to the National Anticorruption Center, the victim is a citizen of Slovakia who claims that he was dispossessed of €210,000, IPN reports.

It was established that the suspect, together with other persons, pursuing the goal of dispossessing the Slovak citizen, convinced this to invest €340,000 in the construction of a multifunctional sports complex on Trandafirilor St in Chisinau for the National Basketball Federation, even if the Federation didn’t have ownership rights over the land where the complex was to be erected and authorization for construction.

Thus, in 2015 the Slovak citizen, holding the post of manager of a company, transferred different sums of money to the accounts of the Basketball Federation of Moldova and transmitted also money in cash to the suspect and other persons as advance for starting the complex designing works.

The Federation’s president was placed under arrest for 72 hours. He faces up to 15 years in jail.
