Priest Cibric accuses Chisinau City Hall, demands apologies from Jews

The Chisinau City Hall, especially Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, are responsible for the incident involving the Jewish candlestick placed in the Europe Square, the bishop of Parascovia Church Anatol Cibric told a news conference. Accompanied by representatives of the Moldovan Orthodox Association “Blessed Mother Matrona”, priest Cibric said the City Hall is to blame for the installation of “anti-Christian objects” in central Chisinau and will be sued for this. “Instead of defending the native people of this country from profanation, Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca allowed placing the candlestick, treating this act as state event,” said the priest, stressing that the mayor assaulted thus the sentiments of all the Christians. “The Christians' protest represented self-defense as the Chisinau and central authorities refused to defend us. Moreover, they participated in acts that profane the Orthodox religion. Afterward, together with the affiliated press, they take part in our persecution,” the bishop said. “The Jewish community should apologize to the people as they assaulted this people's religious feelings.” Elena Barcă, jurist of the Association “Blessed Mother Matrona”, said given that 94% of the faithful in Moldova are Orthodox-Christians, according to statistical data, the placement of “anti-Christians symbols” in central Chisinau is aimed at inciting religious hatred. The Jewish candlestick was placed in the Europe Square on December 11, on Hanukkah. On December 13, a group of Orthodox Christians moved the candlestick near the monument to Stephan the Great. A wooden cross was put in its place.
