Prisoners exhibit works in downtown Chisinau

About 30 articles made by detainees were put on display at an exhibition staged in the central park on December 10, on the International Human Rights Day, Info-Prim Neo reports. Cristina Beldiga, project coordinator of the Institute for Penal Reform, said the exhibit aims to show that even in prison the persons can make nice things. ”We want to make the detention period for prisoners efficient. The detainees are engaged in activities designed to stimulate them to work and to create psychological comfort. Working day by day, they create a favorable environment in the penitentiary,” Beldiga said. Cristina Matu, public relations specialist at the Department of Penitentiary Institutions, said the exhibition shows the prisoners also have rights and their rights should be respected. According to the Institute for Penal Reform, there are 17 penitentiaries in Moldova, where 6,555 prisoners serve sentences. In 2008, there were 204 detainees per 100,000 people in Moldova.
