Prosecutors’ interests are put above people’s rights, lawyers

During the examination of criminal cases, the decisions are taken to meet the interests of the prosecutors, not of the people or civil servants, president of the Lawyers Union of Moldova Gheorghe Amihalachioaie said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. In the Congress of Lawyers of Moldova on May 14, Gheorghe Amihalachioaie said lawyers’ rivals include the prosecution bodies in the person of police officers and employees of the Prosecutor’s Office. “They are representatives of the state, have powers and equipment and sometimes fulfill orders given by their seniors. That’s why the lawyers encounter procedural problems,” he stated, adding steps should be taken to make sure that the lawyers enjoy the same rights. Lawyer Ilie Myrzenko said the prosecution authorities make full use of their power and it is hard to defend the interests of the citizens when the state interests are safeguarded. “We do not have fair justice and fair trials. This problem can be solved only in Parliament,” said Ilie Mîrzenco. Another lawyer, Ilie Rotaru said the imperfect legislation is another problem. “Today the courts often violate the procedure and the lawyers have the right to monitor the trials so that they are conducted objectively,” he stated. In Moldova there are over 2,000 lawyers.
