Protest against construction in Europe’s Square

A group of people led by activist Maia Laguta organized on Wednesday a protest against the construction of two-storied café with a terrace near Europe’s Square in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vitalie Spranceana, one of the protesters, said that the construction of any object must be consulted with civil society, not only with officials. “I heard that the City Hall is ready to start a dialogue. Unfortunately, these talks are always post-factum. When the building foundation is laid and a fence is raised, we are called to negotiate. We need a mechanism for dialogue. We don’t admit such constructions. We aren’t against building pizzerias in the city. Let them built pizzerias near the Central Market, this is the Public Garden. Such constructions don’t belong here”. Director of the Agency for Inspection and Restoration of Monuments Ion Stefanita said that the law forbids any construction in protected areas of national importance, such as the Public Garden Stephen the Great. Any building is allowed at a minimal distance of 100 meters from historic monuments. The Agency demands an order to stop the works and the initiation of a prosecution for malfeasance in office by the functionaries who authorized the construction. The City Hall’s press service told Info-Prim Neo that Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca issued an ordinance suspending the construction works on December 24. Nonetheless, workers were seen on the spot strengthening the foundation of the future café.
