Protesting pensioners refuse compensations for bus and trolleybus trips and ask civil society to engage in talks with local councilors

The pensioners who protest in front of the Chisinau City Hall say they will not submit applications for nominative compensations for trips by public means of transport to the Social Assistance Division because they do not want to be deprived of concessions, Info-Prim Neo reports. The persons dissatisfied with the Chisinau Municipal Council's decision to raise the water and sewerage charges and bus and trolleybus fares have protested in front of the City Hall during three days. On Thursday, October 1, the number of protesters was lower. But the pensioners do not give up hope that they will obtain the annulment or revision of the Council's decisions. They propose that the compensation of 70 lei for persons with a monthly income lower than 1,450 lei be transferred to the Electric Transport Company and the Urban Bus Company, but they be allowed to travel free of charge in continuation. Representatives of the Union of the Communist Youth of Moldova came to the City Hall to make common cause with the protesting pensioners. They brought them red carnations and carried for several minutes placards with the words: “It s Only the Beginning”, “The Youth, Pensioners, Justice”, “Pro Esteem and Respect”, “The Youth and the Pensioners Together for Justice”, “We are Near You”. A member of the Union Vlad Gogu said that young people will gather in downtown Chisinau the next days to support the pensioners. Maia Laguta, the head of “Salvgardare”NGO” who organized the protests, called on the pensioners not to accept the young people's support as they serve the interests of the Communists Party. “Another group of students supporting another party could also come and they could come into conflict. We should not allow them to ransform our protests into political action,” Laguta said. Asked by Info-Prim Neo's reporter, the deputy police commissioner of Centru district Lilian Luca said that the police arrested no protester even if some of them broke the law, blocking the central boulevard for traffic for two consecutive days. According to him, if somebody is held accountable it will be the organizer of the protests, who assumed responsibility for the developments. The police are gathering evidence, but it will be the Prosecutor's Office and the courts that will punish those to blame. On the third day of protests, Maia Laguta calls upon the participants not to block the movement of the units of transport, to protest peacefully and not to react to provocations. However, the situation in downtown Chisinau is tense and the protesters continue shouting and cursing even if they promised not to. The pensioners expect representatives of the civil society to come to the City Hall as they want to ask them to engage in talks with the local authorities. A number of protesters said they came to the protests by trolleybus, but refused to pay for the trip. From October 1, a trip by trolleybus in Chisinau costs 2 lei, while by bus – 3 lei. The fare in the suburbs of Chisinau is higher, depending on the location.
