Socialist MPs criticize the PAS’ bill that allows introducing postal voting in the autumn presidential elections for Moldovan citizens in the United States and Canada. According to them, such an initiative seriously violates the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

“This draft law seriously violates the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. Specifically, it discriminates against the majority of voters in relation to the minority of voters. There is a general rule that says very clearly that elections are free and fair when the same conditions are created for all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Some citizens cannot be favored over other citizens,” said Deputy Speaker Vlad Batrîncea, who heads the parliamentary group of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists.

The MP noted that the parliamentary majority changes the rules of the game in the presidential election year, which is contrary to the Electoral Code. “This initiative is a special law that has nothing to do with the Electoral Code. The authors of this bill believe that the CEC will set down rules and regulations for postal voting. Thus, they want to introduce double procedures and assign responsibility to CEC,” said Vlad Batrîncea.

He also said that if the draft law is adopted by the PAS parliamentary majority, the Socialists will challenge it in the Constitutional Court and international organizations.

A group of MPs of the Party of Action and Solidarity Party registered a bill to pilot postal voting. The authors argue that this initiative comes to ease the voting process for Moldovan citizens in the diaspora, especially in countries where the distances to polling stations are very large. According to the draft law, postal voting will be implemented initially in Canada and the United States.

PAS also announced that on March 7, the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities will hold the first round of consultations on the draft law.
