Railway passenger transportation in suburbs to be ceased
The railway transportation of passengers in the suburbs will be halted. The issue was discussed in a round table meeting centering on a project aimed at improving the energy consumption of the traction rolling stock, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Eduard Calancea, expert in strategic planning policies within the building public policy management capacities project, said the cessation of operations for trains involved in passenger transportation in suburbs and the liquidation of railway stations in the suburbs represent one of the four options included in the public policy proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure.
The proposal also envisions introducing a system for monitoring the locomotives’ fuel consumption and fuel supply, implementing the system of making traction profiles more efficient and elaborating charts of traction schedules, continuing the substitution of wooden sleepers with reinforced concrete sleepers and the substitution of used rails. Another option envisages the substitution of diesel engines and modernization of locomotives. The last option of the same document concerns the modernization of locomotives and cessation of railway transportation in suburbs.
The public policy proposal regarding the inefficient power consumption of traction rolling stock within the railway system has been drafted during five months by a group of experts in the field. The document shall be implemented in 2012-2021 and its aim is to diminish the consumption of fuel oil by 40% and to improve the activity of Moldova’s Railways.
