Recipients of social welfare will do community service

The unemployed persons registered with local Employment Agencies will do community service at the request of the mayor if they receive social welfare. The Cabinet approved a bill to amend and supplement the Law on Social Welfare to allow for this, IPN reports.

The type of work, number of worked hours and monitoring of the activities of community interest will be defined in regulations that will be approved by the Cabinet after the bill is adopted.

The hours of community service will be calculated proportionally to the size of the social welfare from which the family benefits, but will not exceed 40 hours a month. The normal length of working hours and the rules concerning security and safety at work will be respected.

The families that get social welfare of up to 30% (288 lei) of the minimum guaranteed monthly income (961 lei) will not be engaged in community service.

The law specifies the mayor’s responsibilities in organizing community service, such as to draw up an annual plan of activities of community interest, to monitor the persons involved in community service and to determine the worked hours.
