Record temperatures in last 60 years
The mean air temperature during June 1-July 4 was by 3-4°C above the average, these being record temperatures in the last 60 years, announced State Weather Service director Ilie Boian at a meeting of the Emergencies Commission on Thursday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Ilie Boian noted that the abnormally hot weather and scarce rainfall across the country throughout June and early July have lead to a drought that affects some 90 percent of the country.
“There has been very little rainfall in this period. On 95% of the country rainfall was just 10-45 liters per square meters, which is 15-60%. Moisture reserves in the soil is also low and in some layers moisture is completely depleted”, said Boian.
He added that the discharge of the rivers Nistru and Prut are way below the norm, constituting 30-50% of the long-term mean for this period of the year.
Making forecasts for the following period, Boian said that in the next two days there will be no rainfall, and only during 7-12 showers are expected in parts of the country. Temperatures will fall gradually starting July 13.
