Removal of Jewish candlestick described as act of vandalism

The Jewish community considers that the aggressive acts by the archpriest of Saint Parascovia Church Anatol Cibric and a group of Orthodox Christians are acts of vandalism, xenophobia and antisemitism. Member of the community ask the Moldovan Metropolitan Church and the central authorities to examine the given case and take measures, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We cannot tell the Metropolitan Church what it should do to punish Cibric. It is His Holiness Vladimir who must take a decision in this case. The Jews have the same rights as the other residents of Moldova, as in other countries. The given group profaned a Jewish symbol,” Alexandru Pincevski, the head of the Jewish community, said in a news conference on December 14. Alexandru Pincevski said the Chisinau City Hall allowed installing the Jewish candlestick in the central park's Europe Square, but priest Anatol Cibric vandalized the Hanukkah candlestick and moved it near the monument to Stephan the Great. On Sunday, December 13, a group of people headed by archpriest Anatol Cibric removed the Jewish candlestick and placed a wooden cross instead of it. The candlestick was installed in the Europe Square on Friday, on the occasion of the Hanukkah holiday, and was to stay there for eight days.
