Results of first audit of papers presented

The Audit Bureau of Circulations and Internet (BATI) presented the results of the first audit of ten newspapers working in Moldova. According to the audit, among the outlets with the largest number of copies are the dailies “Komsomoliskaya” (on Thursday - 43,189 copies) and “Timpul” (on Friday - 12,683 copies), the weekly paper “Antenna” – 28,908 copies, and the regional weekly publication “Unghiul” (Ungheni) – 10,845 copies, Info–Prim Neo reports. There were monitored 10 newspapers, including the dailies Adevarul, Timpul, Komsomoliskaya Pravda, the national papers Antenna and Jurnal de Chisinau, the regional papers Gazeta „SP” (Balti), Observatorul de Nord (Soroca), Cuvantul (Rezina), Unghiul (Ungheni) and the free weekly publication Totalinaya reclama “Gorod” (Chisinau). The audit was performed between October-December 2010. Victoria Musteata, head of the Audit Bureau’s Board, said not all the papers want to be audited either because they want to hide something or do not want to make public certain data. She also said that the audit of the media outlets enables to have accurate and transparent figures. “It is clear where the money goes and what it is paid for,” Victoria Musteata stated. BATI executive director Alexandru Burdeinyi said that in order to be audited, the media institutions and the representatives of the advertising market must become members of the Bureau and pay a symbolic fee. BATI aims to work out a system for assessing websites and to obtain general information about the use of the Internet in Moldova. BATI was founded last July as a nonprofit organization with the aim of strengthening the independent mass media in Moldova.
