Rezina veterans were fooled that Victory Day money was from Voronin, Lib-Dems
The Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption and the prosecutors are investigating the circumstances in which the sums from the National Assistance Fund which were distributed ahead of the Victory Day on May 9 to WWII veterans and widows in Rezina district got into the hands of the Communists, - Mihai Godea, the head of the Liberal-Democratic faction in Parliament, has told a news conference today.
Nicolae Olaru, the chairman of the Lib-Dem Rezina branch, said he informed the law enforcement agencies that Communist activists had offered the money to the veterans in envelopes, instead of it being released from the postal offices. The Communists were apparently telling the recipients the money was a 'modest aid' from ex-president Vladimir Voronin.
Olaru added that ahead of the May 9 celebrations, by order of Rezina district chairman Valeriu Ciorici, a Communist representative asked the director of the Rezina Postal Center, Valeriu Amarfii, for the sum of 74,000 lei destined for the veterans and war widows in the region. By giving away the money, Valeriu Amarfii broke the provisions of the contract with the district social assistance agency, which stipulated the distribution of the benefits through the postal offices.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Communications confirmed today in a press release that Valeriu Amarfii was dismissed in connection with the case. The Ministry said it conducted investigations in other districts as well, but no similar cases have been discovered.
