Roman Catholics enter Passion Week

The Roman Catholics celebrate today Palm Sunday or the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days before his Passion. Passion Week starts on Monday, April 6, and ends on Sunday, April 12, on the Resurrection. Passion Week prepares the faithful for the Resurrection. “This week is preceded by the 40-day Lent. Until the Resurrection, every Christian is urged to meditate on the suffering and death of Jesus Christ at an individual spiritual level,” Vasile Cohanovschi, student at Saint Iosif Seminary in Iasi that forms part of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Chisinau, has told Info-Prim Neo. The days of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Passion Week have a special meaning, while the special services start from Thursday, which is also known as Holy Thursday. “On Holy Thursday, we commemorate the institution of Eucharist and priesthood. All the priests come to the cathedral to bless the oils used in the Communion. On the evening of the same day, there is commemorated the Passion,” Vasile Cohanovschi said. Good Friday commemorates the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Golgotha. The Holy Cross is unveiled at a religious ceremony called the Road of the Holy Cross. A solemn service is held on Holy Saturday evening. The Resurrection Procession takes place at the end of the service and then the food is blessed. According to the 2004 census, in Moldova there are 4,645 Roman Catholics.
