Romania helps Moldova fight domestic violence
The info system dealing with domestic violence, piloted in two Moldovan districts, was analyzed at a round table organized Thursday by UNFPA, Info-prim Neo reports.
A project dealing with developing such an info system has been implemented in Drochia and Cahul districts, from July 2008 to January 2009. UNFPA analysts say all the projected goals have been achieved, except for the software.
“We have started a computerized program, but Moldova does not have the proper environment to apply the software to support the data collecting system,” said Victor Lutenco, an analyst with UNFPA Moldova.
Ion Nicara, the deputy president of Drochia district, says the biggest accomplishment of the project was founding a shelter for the victims of domestic violence in the district, many of whom are mothers with children.
“We still insist on opening such a shelter in Cahul. There are rooms and specialists. Money is the problem,” said Cahul ditrict's deputy president Nicolae Seremet.
Kaarina Immonen, a UN representative in Moldova, underlined the importance of the partnership between the governments of Moldova and Romania. “We try to have a continuous approach in the projects dealing with preventing and fighting domestic violence in Moldova. The bad part is that the gender-based violence is rising. The good part is that Moldova is part to several UN conventions.”
Ion Serban, an advisor for the Romanian embassy to Moldova, says those 4.7 million euros granted by the UN to Romania, 800,000 euros were dedicated to projects in Moldova. “Moldova is a priority for the Romanian government,” he said.
