Director M. Chris Nedeea (Nedea Cristinel Marian), the founder of The Impossible Theater in Cluj, announces the premiere of William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in Chisinau. The play will be premiered at Eugene Ionesco Theater on Friday, March 6.
“We wanted to put on a modern production of a classical play for a long time. That’s why we wanted this cooperation with the Cluj director Chris Nedeea,” the art director of Eugene Ionesco Theater Petru Vutcarau told a news conference on March 4, Info-Prim Neo reports.
M. Chris Nedeea said that they chose this play because it is full of love. “A moment came when I realized that there was a feeling that we denied – the unhealthy and visceral need of each other, a need that is always in contradiction with the arrogance and egoism that defines us,” Nedeea said.
The play crew had to introduce considerable changes to the original text so as to make it closer to the sensibility of the contemporary epoch or, more precisely, to the lack of sensibility, said the director. It is not by accident that the protagonists Romeo and Juliet are represented by two second-year students of the Chisinau Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts.
“They still have a little innocence and freshness that we need in this play. Theoretically, they have not been yet contaminated by the theater clichés and this can constitute a major advantage. They are still very close to that first love about which they do not have to find out from films and books,” M. Chris Nedeea said.
The characters will be dressed in street clothes, while the setting will correspond to the epoch. The whole troupe of Eugene Ionesco Theater is involved in the play, except three actors.
The performance will be given on March 7, 8 and 11 and then in April. Tickets cost between 50 and 200 lei.
