SCM authorizes prosecution against former judge

The Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) has lifted the immunity of a former judge at Chisinau’s Riscani District Court on the request of Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin.

As the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a press release, the judge, who resigned in the meantime, will be prosecuted on charges of delivering unlawful decisions and of tampering with public records.

In particular, the judge has been accused that he and three court clerks manipulated the case-allocation system so that certain civil cases would be assigned to him.

To date, the prosecutors have identified 20 civil cases that were tempered with. As a rule, they involved large amounts of money. For example, in one such case the judge ordered the state-run Moldova Railways to pay 93 million lei to a Cahul-based firm.
