Security Zone residents mount protest
Several hundred inhabitants of the villages Pirita, Cosnita, Dorotcaia and Pohrebea of Dubasari district Tuesday staged a protest at the trilateral peacekeeping post No. 9 near Vadul lui Voda, where a young man from Pirita was shot mortally on January 1. The locals demand that the post be removed, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Anatol Croitoru, a participant in the Nistru war of 1992, said the protest involved combatants, relatives and friends of the killed young man and entire families from the villages situated in the Security Zone. Some of them laid flowers at the place where the tragedy happened. Several nongovernmental organizations joined in with the protesters.
The people demand that the central authorities take measures to remove the peacekeeping post during a week. Otherwise, they will take it away by their own forces. Anatol Croitoru said this post is not necessary as no attack has been mounted on the bridge near Vadul lui Voda in 20 years.
According to Anatol Croitoru, more and more people join in the protest and the people have to stay on the road going to Chisinau. Many locals are waiting for units of transport at home to be taken to the peacekeeping post.
The joint peacekeeping forces were dispatched to the Security Zone after Moldova and Russia signed an agreement on the principles of peacefully settling the armed conflict of the spring-summer of 1992. Moldova pleads for replacing the military peacekeeping forces with internationally-mandated civil forces.
