Senior railway official suspected of drug trafficking
The deputy head of the Chisinau Railway Station, Grigore Lozanciuc, is suspected of drug trafficking. The information was made known to the general public by drug police chief Vladimir Ceban at a news conference on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to Ceban, during the arrest the police discovered that the suspect carried two small packages containing 5 grams of heroin. The suspect claimed that he bought the drugs from a Chisinau resident, who was later arrested. Following searches at the address of the latter, the police seized 8 packages containing 30 grams of heroine as well as 200 psychotropic pills.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against both suspects. If found guilty, they could serve from 7 to 20 years in jail.
The Chisinau Railway Station declined to make official statements on the case. “We cannot say anything because we don't know on what charges he was arrested. You should better contact the police for details”, a spokesperson for the Station told Info-Prim Neo.
At the same conference, Vladimir Ceban also informed that the police arrested two men, both with criminal histories, when they were trying to push 25 grams of heroin for $2,500. After searches at the temporary domicile of boss of the trafficking gang, a foreign citizen, the police discovered 7 kilograms of heroin.
A man, resident of Straseni district, was held on charges of trying to smuggle €65,000 worth of cocaine to Spain and Portugal in the exhaust pipe of a Mercedes van.
A village woman, 44, was arrested as she carried two bags containing a brown substance of vegetal origin, which later appeared to be processed poppy straws. Police believe that, if turned to opium, the value of the seizure is 450,000 lei.
1,625 cases related to illegal drugs were recorded from the beginning of the year. The value of the seized drugs is 300 million lei.
